Brush Bronze

What's the proper way to use a bronze bore brush on a handgun?

Do you use it dry, or with the inside of the barrel wet with gun cleaner, or do you pour gun cleaner in the barrel with the bore brush inside, or what? Do you use the bronze bore brush everytime? Will it wear out the rifling grooves?

Well there are different ways people use them. But what works for me is to run a wet cleaning patch through with cleaning solvent such as Break Free CLP or Hoppe’s #9 and let it soak in for a few minutes or even hours. Like watch a movie or something so the solvent can work into the crud. If it’s a used gun I bought, with a real nasty bore I let it soak overnight. Then I run a dry patch and then run my brush through. I repeat this until the bore is spotless and my dry patch come out clean. Then I run a patch with something to protect it. Like a very light coat of Remington Gun oil, or Hoppe’s, whatever to leave a protective light coat. And that’s it.

Some lead deposits can be a bugger to get out and require many passes with the bore brush. To save a bunch of that I fire a copper jacketed round through to push out some of the lead. I do this with my revolvers that fired a bunch of solid lead bullets.

Its softer then the barrels steel so it will not harm it.
